Marty Wilson

Artist Statement

I have always felt the creative process is essential to the human experience. As a child my parents recognized my interest and I was given the supplies I needed and art lessons. When I retired from teaching I found myself ready to begin painting for my own enjoyment and expression. While I can draw and paint realistically I find I am increasing drawn to more allegorical themes. I enjoy all aspects of watercolors and styles. My inspiration comes from nature, family, travels and my own spiritual and emotional growth.

Personal and Education

Marty Wilson grew up in Whittier and attended the Whittier schools and graduated from Whittier College in 1969 with double majors in Fine Arts and English. She married and moved to Montebello began teaching there while raising a family. While teaching a variety of subjects over her twenty-five year career, Marty spent most of her time as an art teacher and art specialist. She was selected to be a mentor teacher and wrote a workbook for teachers that developed art projects for Social Studies units. After retiring, Marty volunteered at the Huntington Library Art collections as a docent. In this way she was able to continue working with children, encouraging and inspiring them to appreciate the arts and broaden their horizons. Marty has been practicing the art of Tai Chi for fifteen years.

In October 2009 Marty shared the gallery with
Suzette Hodnett and James Stone.
