As a self taught computer programmer, I commonly found myself working on web projects without the luxury of a graphic designer. Out of necessity, I began taking stock photographs for web work. Over the years, I began to really enjoy the interface between efficiently functional and tastefully designed websites. My mom and I started WhittierArtists.com during the summer of 2007. Over that time, through the countless emails and phone calls, one phrase seems to pop up between us over and over. We sarcastically say, “Well, this certainly isn’t boring.” Yes, indeed, WhittierArtists.com certainly isn’t boring. We are constantly learning about people's artwork and getting new ideas on how to make the site better. What kind of information should be in an artist’s statement? How will we photograph hand painted gourds so you can see the artwork all the way around? How do I make a facebook page for the site? How do we eliminate keystoning when we photograph large paintings? What should we post on the blog? Wait, what is a blog in the first place? Very slowly, over the years, we have built up an interesting marketing model and overall style. I don’t know any other community based artist site that does it quite like we do.
I really enjoyed taking photography in high school. I considered majoring in it in college, but ended up with a degree in taxonomic botany. After college, I took up rock climbing and found myself spending a lot of time in breathtaking scenery, taking countless digital pictures. I particularly enjoy nature scenes, macro photography and silhouettes. Now that I have two kids, I carry a camera with me almost everywhere. My husband and I, along with our two small kids, recently travelled to the Galapagos Islands. We stayed for a month. My husband and I volunteered at the Charles Darwin Research Station, rebuilding their natural history collections database. I often had the camera in one hand and a baby or baby bag in the other!
I invite you to enjoy WhittierArtists.com as much as my Mom and I have enjoyed inventing and building it. I will even make a guarantee: you won't be bored! Cheers!
