Contact Luis Vega at luisvega@whittierartists.com I graduated from Cal State Long Beach in 2002 with a degree in Art Education. As an Art Ed. Major I studied and explored a variety of media with my focus being drawing and painting. I am currently a high school art teacher who is trained in promoting intrapersonal and visual/spatial skills. I remember having a conversation with one of my professors’ about teaching and he told me that although he had friends who were more financially successful than he, he could honestly say that he looked forward to his Mondays. He really enjoyed what he did. I believe this to be true for me too. I enjoy my job and everyday my students and I learn something and see something new.

My artwork is inspired by my family, personal reflection, relationships, and conversations with friends, and social issues. Some ideas began as college class assignments that were put on hold for one reason or another. With major changes in my personal life and in the world, my thinking has changed in major ways as well. The movement towards getting back to “the basics” has encouraged me to reflect on the basics of my life. The basics are about appreciating and being inspired by everyday moments. Some examples include, playing with my son, cutting the lawn or reading a newspaper.

In the past year, I have focused more on sculptures than on the prints of my more recent past. I am a member of a large, resourceful and creative immigrant family. I benefit from the little tricks and skills my family members have picked up along the way. My family has convinced me that the hard work of collaborating with others almost always improves upon my original visions. My move from more individually conceived and produced prints to more collaboratively produced sculptures reflects this newer emphasis.
